This video is a short version of the 2-hour interactive webinar, organized by Deltares in close collaboration with Red Cross and Kathmandu Living Labs to map the flood affected areas in Nepal and contributes to the Global Call by Red Cross.
More than 100,000 people have been affected by on-going floods and landslides in Nepal. The impacts of this event are also resulting in shortage of food and health issues due to contaminated water. The heavy rainfall still continues, therefore, the situation might further deteriorate.
Emergency service providers and humanitarian groups are continuously contributing in rescue and relief efforts in the affected areas. They are providing assistance with food, clean water and shelter materials, but it is difficult to get supplies to the right place in some areas. The major earthquake of 2015 makes the old maps less relevant to current locations, status of critical infrastructure (especially road). Many areas in Nepal have not yet been mapped, additional difficulty in the rescue and relief efforts.
Red Cross has announced a special Global Call for people to map the flood affected areas. With the help of recent satellite imagery, participants can digitise maps of roads, buildings, rivers and other key infrastructure. This will facilitate the Red Cross and other humanitarian groups and volunteers to find alternative routes, open spaces for temporary shelters and for information such as where helicopters can land.
OpenStreetMap (OSM) is one of the key sources for our CIrcle tool (Critical Infrastructures: Relations and Consequences for Life and Environment) and our 3D interactive modelling environment of Delft3D FM.
These maps, tools and simulation software are essential in order to give expert advice and to make solid and informed decisions.
